Which kinda gets at how I’m sure a lot of people must feel about this comeback–it’s fun, breezy, lighthearted. Heck, with a name like “Sunny Summer” it’s like it’s doing all it can to remind you not to take it too seriously. It’s just that, after their epic series of singles going back to “Me Gustas Tu”, a song with such modest ambitions is itself jarring. I mean “Love Whisper” comes at you like a Mahler symphony. Here, we have a song which is underpowered by the standard of many GFriend b-sides.
Plus, “Time For the Moon Night” is still so recent! And such a big hit too–if “Sunny Summer” should underperform, what with Twice on the stages and all, I hope people won’t forget how strongly GFriend entered 2018 and all that success that shall not be undone!
None of this should be taken to mean “Sunny Summer” is a “bad” song. It’s more effective at what it does, in my view, than Lovelyz’ “That Day”. And I have no doubt that GFriend’s ambition is undimmed and will be back at us in a future epic. So I will support the girls in their easy breezy summer comeback and hope for a few trophies and good album sales–and I still need to hear the album! Ah, but the last album is still so dominating in my thoughts, I cannot move on! GFriend hwaiting!
