I’m big on the significance of mentally reading “out loud”. I don’t go in for speed-reading in any way, shape, or form. If one cannot be troubled to actually read aloud– and in Classical times, as Nietzsche points out, a person reading silently would have been thought very peculiar– one must at least sound off each phrase, note by note, inside one’s head.
This extends beyond text “proper” every time I see a fresh comment from da GBFM, because I always have to first mentally read off his full title. Of course his polymoniker handle is instantly recognized (and beloved) by all; but to skip the full proclamation of his regal presence somehow feels like a cheat, and diminishes the approaching fun. His full title is a sonic cue, a fanfare, awakening the mental appetite’s relish for what is to come.
Anyway, the full rhetorical majesty of:

–Yes, these kids are a bit rough. And the video is truncated, so you won’t get to the end anyway (but what sort of blasphemy is it to listen to Mahler on youtube?!). I recommend Haitink’s recording with the Concertgebouw– which appears only to be available on mp3 currently, unless you spring for the (quite affordable) boxed set.
Speaking of which: I vigorously dissent from the view that “bring da movies” is obsolescent. Who watches Ingmar Bergman on streaming internet video? Damnit all, I want quality control, and quality demands a DVD. Never mind the mounting horrors in my incrementally-attained mp3 collection. These are “loss-y” in more ways than one. Even in, say, amazon’s online music player, I’ve found pops where they don’t belong in recordings I own on cd. Something is wrong– or is becoming wrong– with the internet– what? paradigm? archetype? “originals”. And just imagine what Eric Holder and his heirs might want to do to, say, Toynbee online. Fiat this, fiat that, fiat everything! And if everything collapses like currency, what will you retrieve? Bring the hardbodiescopies, good people.
